Let’s talk wooden signs. Whether its online, in stores, an inspirational quote, or for a wedding – these signs are everywhere and surprising not to difficult to make! Before the days of Etsy, I began making wooden signs in high school with inspirational phrases such as “live laugh love,” and more recently (with the help of Steven and my mom) made one for my wedding.
To make the board, we used leftover wood from our groomsmen’s gift boxes, along with the tools and stain to keep this project budget friendly. We used wood glue and a nail gun to combine 5 smaller boards into one large 24″ x 32″ board. This board was held together by 3 smaller wooden boards on the back. Once assembled we sanded and stained the wood until it reached the color of my liking.
For the design, I perused a bunch of images on Pinterest, found my favorites, and combine the designs together into my own creation. My mom is an amazing artist so she was able to paint the florals (using acrylic paint) by referencing the pictures, but needed a little guidance for the text.
I found a handwritten styled font “Bromello” on dafont.com. This site is full of hundreds of free, downloadable fonts and is a great resource for DIY projects. Using the image editor GIMP, I wrote out the text of my choice (in my case Steven and Alisha), enlarged the font, mirrored the image and printed.
Next, we traced the text with chalk and pressed down the paper onto the wooden sign to mark where the text should go. From there, we simply traced over the text with paint! I’m so happy with how our sign turned out and can’t wait to hang this in our home as a memory of our wedding day!
