Beauty Essentials for Dry Skin, Hair, & Nails

My skin has always been on the dry side, so in the winter months I often find myself stepping up my moisturizing game to fight dry and flaky skin. Ideally, I’d love to hop on a plane and escape to a tropical island to combat these problems, but since that’s not an option, I’ve settled on a few products that help maintain the moisture in my skin, hair, and nails. Here are my go-to products to help with dry skin, hair, and nails, especially in the winter:

ONE // Peter Thomas Roth FIRMx Peeling Gel
I discovered this product a few months ago when I went to Sephora in search of a hydrating primer because my dry skin was causing my foundation to not apply smoothly. After talking to one of the sales associates, she suggested I take a step back and instead focus on eliminating my texture problem with this exfoliator. After testing out the product on my hand, I was sold. This stuff is seriously magical and visibly takes off my dead skin without leaving my face feeling red and sore. Unlike most exfoliators, this product doesn’t have any rough particles and leaves my skin feeling so soft!

TWO // Neutrogena Hydro Boost Gel-Cream
I brought this moisturizer on my trip to Banff, AB last winter, and it completely saved my skin from the extremely cold climate and dry air. Since then, this product is a staple in my winter routine, and I like to use it whenever my skin needs added moisture. The product is lightweight and doesn’t sting even when applied to chapped skin!

THREE // Origins Drink Up Intensive Overnight Mask
In the winter months, I will use this mask nightly as a moisturizer. This mask is hydrating, doesn’t clog my pores, and leaves my skin looking renewed in the morning. I love it!

FOUR // Dove Deep Moisture Body Wash
I’ve tried both high-end and drugstore body washes, and this by far exceeds all others. This product smells amazing and helps my skin stay moisturized. If I’m traveling or happen to run out of this product, I can always tell the difference right away because my skin will feel dry and not as smooth.

FIVE // Mario Badescu Facial Spray with Aloe, Herbs, and Rosewater
Full disclosure, I’m still unsure whether this product actually helps hydrate my skin; however, it feels refreshing and smells like roses. I like to spray this on my face after applying makeup or whenever my skin looks like it needs a pick me up throughout the day.

SIX // Fresh Sugar Lip Polish
I keep this lip polish in the shower and use it whenever my lips are feeling flaky, or I’m planning on wearing a darker lip color. For me, winter and red lipstick go hand in hand, so it’s important that my lips are smooth in order for my lipsticks to apply evenly. This lip polish, followed by a hydrating lip balm are a must for anyone with dry lips.

SEVEN // Rosebud Salve
I’ve been using this lip balm for over fifteen years and have no plans to stop. It’s a classic, smells good, moisturizes, and leaves a natural rosy tint to my lips.

EIGHT // Aquaphor Healing Ointment
My favorite way to use this product is to apply it generously to my hands before bedtime so I wake up with smooth and hydrated skin. When I lived on the east coast, the dry air and colder temperatures would cause my hands to crack and sometimes bleed, so this ointment was a lifesaver. This product is also great for chapped skin, especially on the nose after a cold!

NINE // It’s a 10 Miracle Leave-in
I discovered this product about ten years ago and have been using it ever since. I spray this product on my wet hair, and it helps detangle and maintain moisture in my hair, without weighing it down. I like to use this product, as well as air-dry my hair most days, in order to help keep my hair healthy.

TEN // Enjoy Luxury Conditioner
I’ve tried a variety of conditioners, but always come back to this one. I’ve been highlighting my hair for years, so I like to use a conditioner that is thick and extra hydrating. When applying, I like to comb this conditioner just on the ends of my hair after shampooing, and then let it soak into my hair for a few minutes before rinsing. Also, this conditioner smells amazing!

ELEVEN // Sally Hansen Cuticle Oil
Nail care is often overlooked but can make all the difference. I keep this cuticle oil in my nightstand and apply it nightly before going to sleep. This oil helps nourish my cuticles and lessens any breakage.

Along with these products, I try to stay hydrated and always carry around a water bottle as a reminder to drink more water. If you have a hard time remembering to drink water, try setting an alarm mid-morning and mid-afternoon as a reminder to drink some water, and also drink a full glass of water at breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
